Turkish airport operator TAV Airports has paid approximately $175m to the State Airports Authority (DHMI) for the operation concession of Istanbul Ataturk Airport and Izmir Adnan Menderes Airport.

TAV Airports invested close to €150m on the operations of Izmir Adnan Menderes Airport’s international terminal across an area of 118,000m².

It won the tender held by DHMI at the end of 2011 and was awarded the operating rights of the domestic terminal in 2012 to the end of 2032.

The operator had invested €266m in building the new domestic terminal at Adnan Menderes Airport, which connected the domestic and international terminals with a bridge system.

"The earnings today are to be invested in the Turkish civil aviation sector."

Transportation, maritime affairs and communications minister Lütfi Elvan said: "Such a leasing amount is being issued when public and private sector collaboration hit the top.

"Turkey is one of world’s leading countries in public and private sector collaborations. DHMI solely has realised 18 similar projects. The government will earn a share of $8bn. The share has been more than $2bn up to now."

DHMI general manager Orhan Birdal said: "TAV is a pioneering company enabling us open up to the world, thanks to build-operate-transfer and transfer of operating rights by leasing projects initiated in Istanbul.

"Atatürk Airport is not Turkey’s but also the world’s most popular airport. The earnings today are to be invested in the Turkish civil aviation sector. We are investing the money, which we gain from aviation, in the aviation industry."

The airport operator paid $139m for the Istanbul Ataturk Airport and $28m for Izmir Adnan Menderes Airport.
