State-owned airport operator PT Angkasa Pura II (AP II) has commenced operations at the $588m Terminal Three at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Tangerang, Indonesia.
AP II president commissioner Rhenald Kasali said that the terminal's construction is expected to be completed by March 2017.
Currently, around 60% of Terminal Three is still under development.
Rhenald was quoted by the Jakarta Post as saying: “We aim for all construction, including the airport railway to finish by March 2017, so we can move all international flights by then.”
During this opening phase, national airline Garuda Indonesia will use the new facility to operate more than 120 domestic flights every day.
Once completed, Terminal Three is expected to serve international flights for Garuda and other airlines, reported Indonesia Investments.
The facility will accommodate approximately 12 million passengers every year initially, and 25 million once it is fully operational.
With the completion of the 331,101m² terminal, the airport will be directly connected to more than 70 countries worldwide, a significant rise from the 30 countries it served in 2015.
The first terminal operations saw the launch of a premium check-in area, a new domestic lounge and Gate 14 at the Soekarno-Hatta International Airport.
