Airport management PT Angkasa Pura (AP) II, operator of Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Jakarta, Indonesia, has unveiled plans for a major expansion. The project includes improving the two runways, constructing two new runways and expanding the passenger areas.
"The new design would not significantly change the airport’s current landscape, but it would be more environmentally friendly," said AP II president director Tri Sunoko told The Jakarta Post. "We will maintain the traditional feel of the facility. The new airport will have a modern touch, but with an Indonesian character, without compromising the objective of accommodating more passengers."

The airport was built in 1982 on 1,800ha and had a capacity of 22 million passengers a year. In 2011, the airport handled 44.3 million passengers; after the expansion it will handle 62 million travellers a year.
Under the expansion plan, runways 1 and 2 will be expanded by adding a taxiway and parking space for 174 aircraft. Aircraft movements will increase from 52 to 62 per hour. The plan also includes the rehabilitation of terminals 1 and 2, the development of a cargo terminal and supporting facilities, and the construction of an integrated building, which will connect terminals 1, 2 and 3.
AP II said the company requires 40ha of land to build two new runways on the northern side of the airport, and allocated $5.5m for land acquisition. AP II engineers have accelerated the engineering design work so that the face lift can be finished by 2014, with groundwork to begin later this year.
The airport operator hopes to complete the expansion of the low-cost terminal by 2013. This includes the construction of a main building, a baggage handling system, an apron expansion and a taxiway.
