The equipment will be able to scan outsize (out-of-gauge) baggage before they are loaded to the aircraft hold.

The large tunnel opening of the scanner enables rapid, easy and efficient inspection of all baggage, including oversized objects, the company said in a statement.

The delivery of the scanner that has been evaluated by the European Civil Aviation Conference (ECAC) in accordance with Standard 3, will begin in the summer of 2015.

"HI-SCAN 10080 XCT is an ideal, cost-effective way to enhance security for all hold baggage and we are delighted that one of the world’s major airports agrees."

Smiths Detection President Richard Ingram said: "HI-SCAN 10080 XCT is an ideal, cost-effective way to enhance security for all hold baggage and we are delighted that one of the world’s major airports agrees.

"The systems are now operating successfully in airports in South America, and continental Europe. Smiths Detection already provides all of Heathrow’s terminals with X-ray screening and Trace detection systems for hand luggage, and this latest award reinforces our close partnership."

The solution has been developed specifically to be integrated into existing baggage handling systems. It also helps in reducing manual checking or the use of other equipments.

Close to 1800 bags can be screened per hour owing to a belt speed of 0.5 metres per second.

The scanner that fulfills current regulatory requirements for the security inspection of checked-in baggage has been certified by the US Transportation Security Administration (TSA).

Employing close to 23,000 people across 50 countries, Smiths Detection develops government-regulated technology products that help in detecting and identifying explosives, chemical and biological agents, radiological and nuclear threats, weapons, narcotics and contraband.
