The new cargo terminal of Al Maktoum International Airport, Dubai World Central (DWC) has received a material handling system (MHS) from Siemens Logistics and Airport Solutions.

The MHS will help the airport enhance the operational performance of the terminal, including the optimisation of cargo processes like cycle times, a cargo tracking capability, direct build-up / breakdown handling, quick transit to and from airside and cargo screening.

This system has specific areas for cargo storage and handling with subsystems like acceptance, bypass, staging and systems for the direct transfer of goods with only short-term storage (cross-dock systems) for both inbound and outbound flow.

It also has fixed and flexible workstations for build up and breakdown areas. Its multilevel storage system has a capacity of more than 800 unit load device positions. In excess of 3000 positions of bulk cargo can also be stored in a very narrow aisle (VNA) system.

The speed of cargo transferring from airside to landside and vice versa can be increased with the direct cross dock lanes.

"The MHS will help the airport enhance the operational performance of the terminal."

A large air-conditioned perishable area measuring more than 16,000 square meters can store and process special cargo.
