South Korean construction company Samsung C&T has secured a contract from Hong Kong Airport Authority (AA) for deep cement mixing works for Hong Kong International Airport’s (HKIA) three runway system (3RS) project.

Under a joint venture (JV) with Hong Kong contractor Build King, Samsung C&T accounts for 70% shares or $240m out of the total $340m civil engineering contract.

The deep cement mixing project is the first stage for developing the 3RS at HKIA.

Samsung C&T Civil Infrastructure Business Unit head Hans Whang said: “We are honoured to be part of the 3RS project, which we understand is meaningful for Hong Kong‘s further development.

Under the terms of the deal, Samsung C&T will be responsible for renovating soft ground located 7m below the sea.

The company will carry out the project by using a deep cement mixing method before land reclamation for the third runway takes place.

Construction work for the project, which is expected to take 20 months to complete, will commence this month.
