Airservices Australia has chosen defence and security company Saab to equip four of its airports with integrated air traffic tower automation technology.

Valued at SEK130m with additional future support options, the contract will be in effect until 2017 and will entail Saab providing a suite of modern air traffic control tools to Brisbane, Cairns, Gold Coast and Perth airports.

The system is a suite of air traffic control (ATC) tools designed to provide air traffic controllers with a common, modern set of key ATC systems integrated into a single platform that can also be customised.

The architecture is designed to support different types of tower positions and can be scaled for towers with different sizes.

Previously in the first phase of Airservices’ National Towers Technology programme, Saab supplied the tower automation system to four other Australian airports.

The prime contractor for the programme will be Saab and NAV CANADA and Frequentis will be the suppliers. Development and production for the technology will take place in Syracuse and Australia.
