Qantas and GE Aviation have developed a new flight data application called FlightPulse to provide pilots with data to help fly efficiently as well as reduce carbon emissions.

Developed with mobile services from GE’s Predix platform, FlightPulse uses recorded aircraft data and smart analytics and allows pilots to securely access their individual operational efficiency metrics and trends.

Qantas fleet operations head Mike Galvin added: “FlightPulse was designed by pilots for pilots. As a result, the information accessible on this platform helps them understand the operational efficiency of their flight.

“It provides pilots with flight data in a very visual way, allowing them to see first-hand the amount of fuel used at different stages of a flight and how they can help to reduce carbon emissions.”

Through FlightPulse, pilots obtain information that was previously available only in aggregate or used by analysts.

GE Australia, New Zealand & Papua New Guinea president and CEO Geoff Culbert said: “We are delighted to build on our long-standing partnership with Qantas and work together to transform flight efficiency with this world-first app.”

“Through close collaboration, we were able to develop a solution for the industry that connects pilots with individualised operational efficiency data for the first time.”

Last year, Qantas also served as the launch customer for GE Aviation’s Digital Collaboration Center located in Austin, Texas, US.

The partnership will enable data scientists, software developers and architects from GE and Qantas to work together to distill some of the data points produced by the aviation sector per year into solutions that can achieve fleet intelligence and operational insights.
