The Port of Seattle has partnered with SkyNRG and Carbon War Room (CWR) to provide sustainable aviation fuel to airlines flying in and out of Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (Sea-Tac).

The partnership, which follows a joint biofuel infrastructure feasibility study led by Port of Seattle, will explore long-term finance options to support the initiative.

CWR and SkyNRG will work with Sea-Tac to assess ways to cover cost differences between sustainable aviation fuels and conventional fuels.

"The demand for sustainable aviation fuel is there, but right now it is more expensive and complicated to source."

The long-term initiative also aims to create strategies regarding locally sourced fuel and new regional economic investments.

It also aims to recognise supply routes for sustainable aviation fuel, and to ensure that any alternative fuels used at Sea-Tac are sustainable.

The existing biofuel supply agreements in the US are being made through individual and expensive contracts between producers and airlines.

Port of Seattle commission president John Creighton said: “The demand for sustainable aviation fuel is there, but right now it is more expensive and complicated to source.

“We want to make it simple and cost-effective for all airlines to access sustainable aviation fuels and ideally create a model that can work for airports around the US.”

The latest partnership also seeks to help realise the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Paris Agreement’s ambition of keeping the world’s temperature rise this century well-below 2 degrees Celsius.
