Pakistan’s Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) will invest nearly $9.6m to purchase a new radar system from INDRA, a Spanish company, to upgrade its air safety and navigation system.

The first phase includes the replacement of radars at the Jinnah International Airport, Karachi, and the Allama Iqbal International Airport, Lahore. Radars at other airports across the country will be changed at a later date.

The agreement was signed between CAA deputy director general air vice-marshal Khawar Hussain and vice-president of INDRA, Farancisco Navarro.

"The first phase includes the replacement of radars at the Jinnah International Airport, Karachi, and the Allama Iqbal International Airport, Lahore."

New radars will be installed in the next 18 months and will replace older versions.

The Dawn quoted Hussain as saying that Pakistani airspace will see an increase in the number of aircraft as a result of the upgrade programme.

This will help accommodate more planes at one time in the airspace, Hussain added.
