Norway’s air navigation service provider Avinor Air Navigation Services (Avinor ANS) is deploying Saab’s wide area multilateration (WAM) technology for air traffic surveillance across the country’s airports.

Replacing Avinor’s legacy radar systems, the new NORWAMs will integrate the air traffic surveillance data across the country, and feed it to the ARTAS (advanced surveillance data system) tracker.

Avinor ANS managing director Anders Kirsebom said: "Saab’s technology will help us to provide the best possible service to our customers in the coming years, at a lower cost than traditional radar."

The surveillance data, provided by the sensors installed throughout the country, is said to comply with standards set for various airspaces such as Enroute, TMA (terminal manoeuvring area), CTR (control traffic region) and surface coverage volumes.

"WAM will improve coverage, accuracy and redundancy over traditional radar at a lower initial and life cycle cost."

WAM will be implemented for TMAs and CTRs in three regions of Norway, under the first phase. The coverage will be expanded subsequently.

Multilateration provides air traffic controllers with precise aircraft position and identification information under any weather condition.

Multiple low-maintenance, non-rotating sensors triangulate aircraft location based on transponder signals, providing greater positional accuracy than traditional radars.

Saab’s multilateration system is operational at nearly 80 airports in Sweden, Austria, Australia, Portugal, the UK and the US.
