The Philippines Government has approved a PHP1.16bn ($26m) plan to renovate Ninoy Aquino International Airport terminal 1 (NAIA-1) in Manila, Philippines.

Philippines Budget and Management Secretary Florencio B Abad said the fund will be given to the Department of Transportation and Communication (DOTC) to retrofit the terminal and build a rapid exit taxiway.
"If we are to revive NAIA-1, we must first address the structural integrity of the terminal for the safety of travellers," said Abad. "That will provide a firm foundation for further improvement work to ensure efficient, convenient and comfortable travel."
Out of the $26m funding, $7.7m will be used for an urgent structural retrofit to improve the structural integrity of the terminal building in compliance with the 2010 National Structural Code of the Philippines.
Another $11m will be used for architectural, engineering and interior works to enhance the airport’s internal facilities, including the provision of immigration counters.

By GlobalDataApproximately $6m will be used to build a rapid exit taxiway to address travel delays and passenger safety enhancements to reduce runway congestion.
The renovation will be funded through a reallocation from the Public-Private Partnership Support Fund in the DOTC’s 2011 budget.
NAIA-1 was completed in 1981 and was initially designed to accommodate 4.5 million passengers per year; the terminal currently serves 7.3 million passengers per year.
The terminal has 16 gates, 84 check-in counters and 22 immigration stations.
