More than half of residents in constituencies close to London Heathrow Airport have shown support for its expansion, a new poll conducted by Populus has revealed.

The market research company interviewed at least 833 adult residents in 12 local constituencies by telephone between 1 July and 3 August 2016.

Of the 10,010 residents interviewed, 51% supported the expansion and 35% oppose it, while 59% of residents feel positive about the airport, with only 8% feeling negative.

The constituencies included Spelthorne, Brentford and Isleworth, Feltham and Heston, Windsor, Uxbridge and South Ruislip, Slough, Hayes and Harlington, Beaconsfield, Ealing North, Ealing Southall, Richmond Park and Twickenham.

Heathrow Airport External Affairs director Nigel Milton said: “Heathrow expansion is no longer a choice between the environment and the economy – our plans will benefit both.

“Heathrow’s new expansion plan and the fact it is supported by a majority of people living near the airport gives the Prime Minister the confidence to make the right choice for a stronger British economy and approve Heathrow expansion.”

Already backed by businesses, trade unions, politicians and airlines, a new third runway at Heathrow Airport is expected to add 40 new long-haul routes, and connect exporters to growing markets in Asia, South America and Africa.

A recent poll by UK market research consultancy ComRes has revealed that two thirds of MPs think the Heathrow expansion will boost Britain’s economy.
