Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) has partnered with Service Employees International Union-United Service Workers West (SEIU-USWW) to train airport service workers.
The workers, who have been contracted to perform tasks such as baggage handling, airline security and aircraft fuelling, will be trained to respond quickly during emergencies at the airport.

Los Angeles Board of Airport Commissioners president Sean Burton said: “LAX staff has made significant changes to ensure airport safety through improved response coordination, increased emergency management staff resources, new equipment, extensive training, and establishing mutual-aid agreements with outside organisations, such as the American Red Cross.
“Training airport service workers to assist passengers during critical times complements the overall emergency-response effort.”
The curriculum and pilot training programme was developed in February by SEIU-USWW and its training fund, the Building Skills Partnership, G2 Secure Staff, American Airlines, and Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA).
Set to be launched soon for a group of workers, the pilot programme will be evaluated, refined based on requirements, and customised later to address the characteristics of each terminal, as well as other airports.
