Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) in the US has completed runway safety area (RSA) improvements to its third runway, 6R/24L, under a mandate from the US Congress.

The runway has been reopened following the completion of the project.

LAX is also set to begin RSA improvement works on its fourth and final runway, 7L/25R, by 22 October.

Taking place over a period of seven months, the phased RSA improvements on runway 7L/25R will include shortening the runway and rebuilding its east end and adjoining taxiways.

LAX said that the runway 7L/25R would remain closed in January 2017 in order to complete works on the west end of the runway, as well as maintenance and rehabilitation.

"Improvement works began in March 2015, and are expected to be concluded by June 2017."

According to the airport, passengers may experience flight delays during the project, while communities living near LAX may also experience increased noise due to a shift in air traffic patterns.

The US Congress has mandated airports across the country to undertake RSA improvements, in a bid to provide extra safety for landing and departing aircraft.

Following the mandate, airport officials have consulted with airline partners, the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), and neighbouring communities before beginning the RSA improvement works.

The third busiest airport in the US, LAX currently provides 742 daily non-stop flights to 101 cities across the nation.

It also offers 1,273 weekly flights to 41 countries on 64 commercial air carriers.
