Global mobile satellite communications service provider Inmarsat has awarded final certification to Honeywell’s JetWave hardware, which allows access to its new GX Aviation in-flight wireless broadband connectivity.

The certification has proved JetWave’s ability to bring Inmarsat’s GX Aviation to the aerospace sector.

It also enables operation of GX Aviation services in all environmental conditions with Inmarsat's existing Global Xpress (GX) satellite network.

Designed to provide in-flight broadband services, JetWave enables the pilots, passengers, operators and maintenance personnel to browse internet, check emails, and stream music and videos and shop online throughout their flight.

The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) have also certified JetWave for safety, environmental and installation standards.

Honeywell Aerospace marketing and product management vice-president Carl Esposito said: "Inmarsat's certification of our JetWave hardware means that customers don't have to wait for a high-speed, global connectivity service. It's available and ready for installation now.

Compared to other solutions, JetWave provides less service interruption and downtime for its users.

It also offers complete services across Inmarsat's global coverage, including at northern and southern latitudes above 40°.

“It is a truly global service that has been engineered with aircraft mobility in mind, ensuring that airlines, business aviation operators and leading aircraft companies can offer high-quality connectivity even at 40,000ft, using a single network from a single provider.”

Inmarsat launched the GX Aviation service this year.
