Hungarian air navigation services provider (ANSP) HungaroControl is set to receive funding from the European Union (EU) for two air traffic management (ATM) development projects.

One of the ATM project seeks to expand free route airspace (FRA) across European borders, while the other aims to ensure safe and efficient flow of aircraft arriving at Austria’s Vienna airport in the Hungarian airspace.

After HungaroControl submitted proposals, the EU’s connecting Europe facility (CEF) agreed to fund 85% of the ATM projects, which have a total budget of €3.1m.

"HungaroControl’s FRA extension project also seeks to improve Matias’ flight data processing capability in a bid to make the system compatible with flexible airspace planning."

FRA refers to a particular section of airspace where users may freely plan a route between a defined entry and exit point, depending upon the availability of airspace.

In 2008, European air traffic management organisation Eurocontrol began the coordinated development and implementation of FRA.

With the proposed EU funding, HungaroControl’s air traffic management system Matias will be able to deal with cross-border FRA and support the introduction of extended FRA in selected Functional Airspace Block Central Europe (FAB CE) countries.

HungaroControl’s FRA extension project also seeks to improve Matias’ flight data processing capability in a bid to make the system compatible with flexible airspace planning.

The second project is to be carried out by HungaroControl and Austrian, Czech and Slovak ANSPs.

It will add AMAN and extended AMAN (E-AMAN) functionality to the Matias system.
