Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) served more than 59.9 million passengers and handled 372,040 aircraft movements last year, marking a growth of 6.1% and 5.8% respectively.

Cargo throughput reached 4.12 million tonnes, representing a year on year increase of 2.4%. This means that the airport has set a new corporate record in all three traffic categories.

In December HKIA handled 5.3 million passengers, up 6.1% compared to the same period in 2012.

It handled 32,830 flight movements, up 6.6%, overtaking the previous record set in August 2013. The cargo volume handled totaled 371,000t, in line with the level recorded in December 2012.

The increase in passenger trips in the month was driven primarily by Hong Kong resident traffic and visitor traffic, which recorded a 13% and 6% growth, respectively, compared to the same period in 2012.

The most significant increases were seen in passenger traffic to and from Mainland China, Taiwan and Japan.

In the cargo segment, imports and exports recorded a 1% year-on-year growth, while transshipments declined 6% compared to December 2012.

Airport Authority Hong Kong CEO Stanley Hui Hon-chung said: "2014 will be another challenging year for HKIA, as demand for air services continues to increase.

"With a daily average of 1,050 flight movements projected in the coming summer schedule, everything is done to ensure we maintain a world-class travel experience for our passengers. We will continue to work closely with HKIA’s business partners to achieve that."

In the last year the airport also set new annual records in cross-boundary traffic with approximately 2.67 million passengers using SkyPier, representing a yearly growth of 2.8%.

In addition, nearly two million passengers hired limousine and coach services travelling between HKIA and Pearl River Delta destinations, up 3% compared to the same period in 2012.
