Canada-based Fort McMurray International Airport has opened a new terminal after three years of construction and a $258m investment.

In addition to the new terminal building, redevelopment of the airport’s surrounding areas have been redeveloped as part of the renovation project.

Located south of the existing runway, the new terminal building spans 15,000m² and will address the demand and accommodate future growth. Itl has the capacity to handle 1.5 million passengers annually, which is significantly higher than the old terminal’s capacity of 250,000 travellers.

The new terminal is important for the municipality of Wood Buffalo, which has reportedly experienced a 75% rise in air passenger traffic since 2010.

Fort McMurray MLA Don Scott said: "We are one of the fastest growing municipalities in North America and we need to make sure that our infrastructure is keeping pace with our growth."

The new terminal has already received its first flight and is expected to handle 1.3 million passengers during its first year.
