Finnish airport services provider Finavia is set to increase the capacity of departure lobby and improve terminal services at Helsinki Airport, in a move to serve 20 million passengers by 2020.

The improvements in the departure hall forms part of the company’s €900m development programme.

The first phase of the programme will be completed in summer 2014, when a new security checkpoint will be introduced in Terminal 2.

Finavia Helsinki Airport director Ville Haapasaari said: "The new line will increase the security check capacity by almost 40%."

Finavia will open five new lines, resulting in a total of 18 lines for Terminal 2. The terminal will also get 12 new check-in machines and ten new bag drop machines, alongside a new additional security checkpoint on the third floor of the terminal.

The airport is expected to invest about €30m in the renovation of restaurant and shop services in 2014-16.

A shop area is expected to be developed near gates 34-35, and is scheduled to be launched in April.

Finavia has also inked an agreement with HMSHost, in a move to create new food concepts at Helsinki Airport based on both international and Finnish flavours.
