Emirates Airline has signed a firm agreement with Airbus for 50 additional A380s worth $23bn, taking forward a deal that was announced at the 2013 Dubai Airshow.

Airbus said that the final paperwork for the deal was completed by Emirates Airline president Tim Clark during his visit to the aircraft maker’s headquarters in Toulouse, France.

"The A380 is our flagship aircraft," Clark said. "It is popular with our customers and delivers results for us in terms of operational performance."

Emirates Airline expects to take delivery of half of the Airbus jet order by the first quarter of 2018.

Airbus chief operating officer customers John Leahy said: "We congratulate Emirates on this impressive achievement and thank the airline for their continued support of our flagship aircraft."

The Airbus A380 entered into service in 2007, with 122 A380s were delivered to ten airlines to date. The aircraft is capable of flying 8,500nm non-stop.

Meanwhile, aircraft leasing and management firm Novus Aviation announced that it has completed a finance lease with Emirates Airline for two Airbus A380-800 aircraft, worth more than $800m.

The transaction is the first for Tamweel Aviation Finance (TAF), a joint venture between Novus, Airbus and the Development Bank of Japan (DBJ).
