The expansion of the terminal parking garage, currently in the design phase, will add four levels and 1,400 premium parking spaces, making it easy for the travellers to go in and come out.

The city expects to double the concessions revenue by 2019.

Security checkpoints will be expanded to reducing the bottlenecks that are a common occurrence at the airport.

A new security hall measuring 80,000ft² will be constructed and the existing pedestrian bridge over Cicero Avenue will be increased from the current 60ft to 300ft.

Chicago mayor Rahm Emanuel said: "Midway is more than an airport. It is an important economic engine for the city of Chicago so with this modernisation we are making an essential investment in the future of Midway but also the future of Chicago.

"These enhancements will create jobs for Chicago’s residents, provide an improved experience for travelers from the garage to the gate, and ensure that our world class city has two world class airports."

The city will issue a request for proposal (RFP) for a single-entity concessions operator in September. As per the tentative schedule, the project will receive bids through mid-December, evaluate the bids in the first quarter of 2016 and forward the proposal in the City Council in the second quarter.

The project is likely to create around 1,700 construction and concession jobs.
