Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA) has appointed aviation experts from US-based engineering company CH2M to manage the airfield pavement rehabilitation and geometric improvements design contract at Reagan National Airport (DCA) in Virginia.

Under the terms of the contract, CH2M will oversee modifications to the airfield in order to address nonstandard airfield geometry and pavement standards.

The company will upgrade the airfield's pavements and infrastructure in a bid to enhance safety, eliminate published hot spots, and reduce pilot confusion.

CH2M project manager Joe Grubbs said: “We look forward to collaborating with the MWAA to provide airfield modifications that will assist in serving the airport's more than 20 million annual passengers.

As part of the contract, CH2M will conduct a pavement condition index (PCI) inspection, modernise the airfield's pavement management system, and develop new designs.

The company will also remove or replace distressed runway, taxiway and shoulder pavements.

CH2M will offer support for planned improvements to airfield elements, including grading and drainage, pavement markings, storm-water management, construction phasing, lighting and signage, as well as maintenance of traffic, utilities, navigational aids (NAVAIDS) and airfield electrical work.
