Designed and integrated by Boeing, the system has two satellites, two network and satellite control stations, associated network operations procedures and prototype user terminals.

With an aim of improving Mexico’s national security, civil and humanitarian programme, MEXSAT offers 3G+ voice and data services to mobile terminals on land, air and sea.

"MEXSAT enhances an already strong relationship with an important customer.”

Operated by Telecomunicaciones de Mexico (Telecomm), the system completed its final tests within ten months following Morelos-3 satellite's launch last year.

The satellite is a part of a series of Mexican communications satellites.

Final tests of the MEXSAT system included exercising the 3G+ services such as voice calls, push-to-talk, internet video sessions, asset tracking, voicemail and text messaging over secure links to prototype terminals on ships, planes, vehicles, handheld devices and fixed sites.

Boeing Satellite Systems International president Mark Spiwak said: “Boeing, working closely with the ministry, has developed a state-of the-art, turnkey satellite system, providing critical communications services throughout the country.

“With more than 30 years' experience building satellites for Mexico, MEXSAT enhances an already strong relationship with an important customer.”

In 2010, Mexico entered into a deal for the acquisition of the MEXSAT system by Boeing Satellite Systems International.
