Austin City Council in Texas, US, has approved a $1.8m expansion project that will add seven new gates at Austin-Bergstrom International airport (ABIA).

The council has said that this expansion will balance the terminal, as well as provide space for increasing number of passengers and operating aircraft.

With the terminal addition, the airport will be able to accommodate approximately 4 million additional passengers a year for a total of 15 million annual passengers, an increase of 27% that will provide a passenger level of service through 2025.

"Hensel Phelps will collaborate with the city and the design firm throughout the design development to include constructability and scope reviews."

The airport currently has 24 contact gates, which have boarding bridges that service airplanes parked at each gate. The terminal is almost reaching its maximum capacity of 11 million passengers.

According to a statement from the council: "Hensel Phelps will collaborate with the city and the design firm throughout the design development to include constructability and scope reviews for optimal design, control of costs, preparation of budgets and schedules, construction trade outreach and procurement of construction."

The contract also makes way for the construction a new concrete apron around the east wing of the ABIA terminal where airplanes can taxi and park as they pull up to the terminal.

Austin Business Journal stated that the planned $240m expansion would add up to eight new gates and roughly 70,000ft² of space to the airport terminal, an increase of approximately 23%.

The council’s statement added: "Preconstruction phase services (concurrently with design) is anticipated to extend until late 2015, at which time the construction manager will be expected to propose a guaranteed maximum price (GMP) proposal for the first phase of construction.

"It has not yet been determined the number of phases or GMP proposals for construction. Completion of all work is anticipated to be mid-2018."
