The Aviation Package is amongst the 23 priorities of the Junker Commission appointed for jobs, growth and investment.

The package proposes scrapping heavy national aviation taxes, securing access to emerging markets through Open Skies, delivering the Single European Sky and reducing regulatory cost-inefficiencies.

"The Aviation Package should not just be about what the commission can do, it should also be about what member states will need to do at home to ensure policy alignment in support of connectivity."

According to the EU Commission’s 2015 Work Programme, an aviation package is necessary to identify the challenges facing the region’s aviation sector along with the measures that can strengthen its competitiveness.

ACI Europe president and Aéroports de Paris president and CEO Augustin de Romanet said: "The Aviation Package is a unique opportunity to reset aviation policy with a strong focus on connectivity, consumers and the economy. The issues that need to be addressed are many, starting from our license to grow and the looming airport capacity crunch."

"To be bold and actually stand a chance of success, the Aviation Package should not just be about what the commission can do, it should also be about what member states will need to do at home to ensure policy alignment in support of connectivity."

The airport operators urged the aviation package to focus on connectivity, consumers and the economy.

ACI Europe requested the EU to resist airline-centric approaches to aviation policy.

Lack of political involvement, and unaligned regulatory intervention in the aviation sector are said to be slowing down the development of air connectivity, making the European aviation sector less competitive.

The European Commission carried out a three-month public consultation on the aviation package earlier this year.
