The Hong Kong Airport Authority (AA) has commenced construction of the three-runway system (3RS) at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA).
The new 3RS is scheduled for completion in 2024, while the new runway will be commissioned in 2022.

Four other contracts have been signed between AA representatives and the contractors carrying out the 3RS reclamation-related works.
Hong Kong AA chairman Jack So Chak-kwong said: “We urgently need this expansion project as HKIA’s existing two-runway system is reaching its full capacity soon.
“With the additional capacity to be provided by the 3RS, airlines can provide more destinations and more frequent flights, and passengers will have more choices and convenience.
“Some 139,000 man-years of construction jobs are expected to be created during the construction phase, with some 123,000 direct employments created upon the commencement of the 3RS operation.”

By GlobalDataThe new project will reclaim nearly 650ha of land, which will be used for a new runway, taxiway system, and passenger building accommodating 57 parking spaces.
The 3RS facility will also feature a high-speed baggage handling system, as well as improved road and transportation networks.
Passengers can easily move from the new building to HKIA’s second terminal using a new automated people mover system.
Once operational, the new facility will be able to accommodate an additional 30 million passengers every year.
By 2030, the 3RS will allow HKIA to handle nearly 100 million passengers and nine million tonnes of cargo a year, as well as address Hong Kong’s long-term air traffic demand.
