US-based space-based global air traffic surveillance system provider Aireon has entered into a data services agreement with Seychelles Civil Aviation Authority (SCAA) in order to increase the country’s air traffic surveillance across the region.

As part of the deal, SCAA will be able to use Aireon’s space-based Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) global aircraft tracking solution to improve the country’s air traffic surveillance system.

The system will also enable SCAA to undertake complete monitoring of the Seychelles flight information region (FIR), which spans across an area of 2.63 million km².

"Aireon’s ADS-B solution will instantly create a safer and more efficient airspace for the Seychelles."

The country’s FIR includes an oceanic airspace and borders the flight information regions of Kenya, Somalia, India, Mauritius, Madagascar and Tanzania.

Seychelles Civil Aviation Authority CEO Gilbert Faure said: “Aireon’s ADS-B solution will instantly create a safer and more efficient airspace for the Seychelles.

“As the expected increase in air traffic throughout our region continues, this system will ensure we remain on the cutting-edge of air traffic surveillance technology, allowing us to better serve our customers.”

SCAA has recently had an increased flow of air traffic in its airspace, mainly between Africa, India and the Asia-Pacific region.

Because of several avionics mandates in place, aircraft flying within the Seychelles FIR are already equipped with ADS-B and controller-pilot datalink communications (CPDLC) systems.

In July, Aireon signed a memorandum of agreement (MoA) with Myanmar’s Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) to develop a concept of operations and benefits analysis to deploy its space-based ADS-B service in the country.
