Airbus has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Malaysian partners to evaluate local solutions for sustainable biomass production in Malaysia.

This initiative is aimed at ensuring that that any future jet fuel production in the region is based only on sustainable solutions.

The companies will complete the first assessment before December.

The collaboration will also assess costs and technologies in order to promote the commercialisation of cleaner aviation fuel.

Among partners in deal are Aerospace Malaysia Innovation Centre (AMIC), Malaysian Industry-Government Group for High technology (MiGHT), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), French research centre CIRAD and BioTech Corp.

Airbus New Energies programme manager Frédéric Eychenne said: "According to our latest global market forecast, Asia-Pacific will lead in world traffic by 2032. Today’s MoU is part of our engagement to support traffic growth, whilst reducing aviation’s footprint on the environment."

UPM vice-chancellor Mohd Fauzi Hj Ramlan said: "We believe that the research will have positive effects on energy conservation and CO2 emissions reduction in the Malaysian and South East Asia aviation sector."

Airbus is providing support to the certification and development of commercial quantities of sustainable alternative fuels for aviation by promoting new regional projects across the globe.

The aircraft manufacturer has formed similar partnerships in Europe, America, Australia, Middle East and China.
