The European Regions Airline Association (ERA), in collaboration with other major industry associations, has urged member states to take immediate measures to reduce flight delays and disruption at airports.

The other associations include International Air Transport Association (IATA), Airlines International Representation in Europe (AIRE), Airlines for Europe (A4E) and Airports Council International (ACI).

They have expressed their serious concern related to the flight delays at European airports emerging from the enhanced border control since Regulation EU458/2017 came into force.

Jointly, the associations urged the member states to take necessary measures that would help minimise adverse impact of the delays on European Union (EU) citizens as well as connectivity at EU hub airports.

In order to minimise disruptions, the member states need to deploy additional human resources and implement new and advanced processes at the airports.

The air transport associations have suggested member states to adopt different measures, which include the deployment of an adequate number of border officers and the installation of new automated border control gates.

In addition, member states, such as Spain and France, which are collecting advance passenger information (API) are required to make use of the provisions established in Article 8 paragraph 2e that were added to enable more efficient checks.

Advance verification on the basis of API data can also help speed up controls for EU passengers on arriving flights.
