The Airports Council International (ACI) has upgraded Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo Madeira International Airport and Porto Santo Airport to the second level ‘Reduction’ of the Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA).

The Level Two carbon accreditation of the two Portuguese airports have been renewed and enhanced to support VINCI Airports’ commitment to environmental responsibility.

In addition, the accreditation was confirmed for another eight Portuguese airports.

All ten airports have taken measures to reduce the corresponding carbon footprint to ensure a cleaner and sustainable environment.

In 2015, the ANA Airports of Portugal were successful in reducing their carbon emissions by 15% compared to the average of the three years from 2012 to 2014.

Entitled AirPact, a comprehensive environmental strategy developed by VINCI Airports to tackle environmental concerns, aims to attain and maintain carbon accreditation for all of the airports in its network.

AirPact provides airport objectives for 2020, in addition to leveraging network synergies while leaving individuals facilities with the flexibility to implement their approach.

In a statement published on the company’s website, VINCI Airports chairman Nicolas Notebaert said: “Reducing energy intensity and greenhouse gas emissions in our airports is one of the main targets of our environment policy.

“By applying ACA, this unique and voluntary carbon management certification on all our airports worldwide, we want to give a strong signal of our commitment to fight global warming.”

An initiative of the ACI, the ACA programme helps airports across the globe manage their carbon emissions.
