The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has started a $2.7bn modernisation and redevelopment project for Newark Liberty International Airport in the US.
Under the project, the new Terminal One will be constructed by replacing the outdated Terminal A at the airport.

The existing Terminal A was opened in 1973, designed to handle a maximum of nine million passengers per annum. Last year, it handled more than 11 million travellers and is functionally obsolete.
Tutor Perini Corporation and Parsons Transportation Group joint venture Tutor Perini / Parsons has been chosen to design and construct the new terminal through a fixed-cost design-build contract.
The facility will be designed as a common-use terminal, where all gates will be used by multiple carriers, aimed at boosting flexibility and efficiency, as well as optimising operations.
Terminal One will be able to accommodate 13.6 million travellers per annum across its three levels. It can be further expanded in the future to meet growing demands.

By GlobalDataFeaturing 33 common-use gates, the facility will be able to manage larger aircraft within one million square feet of terminal space, including check-in, security and baggage claim areas.
New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy said: “As a powerful economic engine, the new Terminal One at Newark Liberty will set standards for 21st century terminal design, customer amenities and operations.”
The new terminal will be constructed in a phased manner to minimise customer inconvenience. By 2021, it is expected to be partially operational with 21 gates and a new parking facility.
Complete operations will start with the addition of 12 more gates by 2022. A covered pedestrian bridge will provide direct terminal access for travellers using AirTrain Newark.
Plans also include airside improvements for planes entering and exiting gates at Terminal One, including a new taxi lane network to enhance the efficiency of operations.
Dual taxi-lanes will be built in addition to terminal improvements to help get planes to and from gates faster.
