Finnish airport operator Finavia has entered a contract with Airbus Services firm Navblue for the deployment of the latter’s collaborative web-based platform, RunwaySense, for runway condition reporting activities.
With this deal, six of the 20 airports handled by Finavia will receive the RunwaySense service, including Helsinki, Oulu, Ivalo, Kittilä, Kuusamo and Rovaniemi, making Finavia the first airport firm to incorporate Navblue’s platform.

The platform utilises the data transmitted by Airbus A320 and A330 aircraft installed with Braking Action Computation Function (BACF) software.
According to the US FAA’s Take-off and Landing Performance Assessment (TALPA) Runway Condition Assessment Matrix (RCAM), RunwaySense will report the runway’s state while landing.
It guides airports to oversee the condition of the runway, enabling them to carry out the runway clearing activities, especially in snowy conditions, for minimised disruption.
RunwaySense data meets the requirement of the ICAO Global Reporting Format (GRF) and generates a data report in connection with the aeroplane’s actual braking action.

Finavia will access the data of RunwaySense through SoftAvia’s Global Runway Reporter Alert (GRRA) software.
From January to September 2021, Finavia airports managed 2.6 million passengers. This marks a 56% drop from 5.8 million in the same period last year.
