Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai, India, has doubled flight operations as the government continue to relax Covid-19 related restrictions to revive the economy.

A spokesperson of Mumbai International Airport (MIAL) told Livemint that the airport will handle 200 daily flights from 1 September. This will include 100 arrivals and 100 departures.

This comes after the union government requested the state government of Maharashtra to increase the number of flights, which was limited to 100 a day.

Subsequently, the state government agreed to increase the number of flights.

The publication quoted the state government saying in a letter: “In response to your letter dated 10.07.20, the Government of Maharashtra has agreed to double the movement of aircraft into Mumbai airport.

“The recommendations of 100 arrivals and 100 departures on a daily basis may be made operational from 1 September onwards.”

The step is expected to reduce pressure on the Mumbai airport, which is one of the busiest airports in the country by passenger count. The airport is operated by MIAL.

Recently, Adani Airport Holdings (AAHL), airport business of Adani Group, announced plans to acquire controlling stake in Mumbai Airport.

The company signed a deal to acquire the debt of GVK Airport Developers (GVK ADL), the holding company through which GVK Group owns 50.5% equity stake in MIAL.

In addition, AAHL will a acquire 23.5% stake of Airport Company of South Africa (ACSA) and Bidvest in MIAL.

The deals will provide AAHL with a 74% stake in MIAL.
