Malpensa and Linate airports in Milan, Italy, are set to upgrade their cabin baggage screening systems in a bid to enhance security checks.

SEA Group, the operator of the two airports, has contracted Smiths Detection for ECAC EDS CB C3, the highest security standard for cabin baggage in the industry.

As agreed, Smiths Detection will deliver up to 18 advanced computed tomography (CT) screening systems, known as HI-SCAN 6040 CTiX, for Terminal 1 of Milano Malpensa Airport and ten additional units for Milano Linate Airport.

The CT technology is capable of detecting advanced explosives with low false alarm rates. They can also screen luggage while electronic devices and liquids remain in bags.

In addition, Smiths Detection will deliver HI-SCAN 6040 CTiX carry-on baggage scanners to reduce the need of security trays at the airport, thereby minimising points of contact at security lanes during the pandemic.

The scope of work also includes providing preventive and corrective maintenance services.

Smiths Detection Europe and Africa vice-president Tony Tielen said: “As key gateways to the rest of the world for Milan, our priority for Malpensa and Linate airports is to provide passengers with the highest standards of security, including taking the precautions to safeguard health.

“With CT technology and high-resolution 3D images, their security officers will be able to make quick and accurate assessments, speeding up security checks to ease any crowding and allow travellers to maximise their safe distance from others at the security lanes.”

The new baggage screening systems will be installed at the airports in multiple phases, with work scheduled to start in this quarter and complete by the end of next year.

Last week, Smiths Detection announced that it has installed 34 units of the CTX 9800 DSi Explosive Detection System (EDS) at 11 airports in India.
