Macau International Airport (MIA) in China has started construction work for the Passenger Terminal Building (PTB) South Extension.
The ground-breaking ceremony was attended by Macau International Airport Company (CAM) officials and other representatives.

Construction started with the commencement of site formation and piling works on site.
As part of the design, the PTB South Extension will be integrated with the existing PTB to further enhance the airport’s passenger handling capacity.
It will increase the total floor area of the PTB by 17,000m², enabling it to accommodate three additional passenger boarding bridges in the departure hall.
Following the commissioning of the PTB South Extension, MIA’s passenger handling capacity is expected to increase to ten million passengers per year from 7.8 million.

In a statement, MIA said that the project team will pay special attention to maintaining hygienic working conditions during the construction period. This is owing to the recent coronavirus Covid-19 outbreak across the globe.
The airport authority will also implement all measures in accordance to the epidemic prevention guidelines issued by the government.
It includes checking the body temperature of workers, as well as encouraging them to wear protective gears.
The project team will also carry out periodic disinfection and cleaning of the site.
Meanwhile, the Covid-19 death toll has reached almost 5,000, with the number of confirmed cases rising to 133,889.
As of 13 March, Macao Special Administrative Region reported a total of ten cases.
