Lufthansa Technik’s Engine Services division has opened a new engine overhaul facility in Hamburg, Germany.
Developed with an investment of €7m, the new facility features a competence centre for engine case repair and an X-ray centre for engine components of all sizes.

The new competence centre is intended to increase the company’s ability to overhaul different types of engine cases, as well as reduce the turnaround timeto three weeks.
According to the Engine Services division, orders for this product are estimated to double over the next three years.
The newly opened X-ray centre is equipped with two systems that can screen the smallest engine blade and the future engine cases with a diameter of 3.5m both digitally and in analogue mode.
It is also capable of storing common i nspection requirements and automating inspections in future.

By GlobalDataLufthansa Technik Engine Services division competence centre head Marcel Rose said: “Our new centre of excellence bundles the competence needed for around 450 repair procedures, some of which are very complex.
“With our employees’ know-how and the state-of-the-art tools and equipment we now have available, we have created a foundation to meet the highest quality standards even for future engine types.”
Lufthansa is also planning to begin the second stage of construction next year with an aim to extend the capacity of the new facility.
In addition, the company intends to use the Hamburg facility to provide on-wing and maintenance, repair and operations (MRO) services for CFM International’s new LEAP-1A and -1B engines powering Airbus A320neo and Boeing 737 MAXairplanes respectively.
