Flights between these two cities will be operated as part of the Public Service Obligation (PSO) formula, which permits public entities to jointly fund flights of special interest within the European Union.

The Government of Lithuania issued the tender in the summer of 2018, which was won by LOT. The flights commenced between Vilnius and London City for the first time on 1 May last year.

Owing to the short runway and steep approach procedure at London City Airport, only some types of aircraft, including the Embraer 190, can be used at this airport.

The E-190s, which are offered by LOT Polish Airlines, have 106 seats in three travel classes.

Lithuanian Airports Aviation Services head Aurimas Stikliunas said: “We are excited to see the route to London City returning to Vilnius Airport.

“This route is a very important link not only for our airport but for the whole economy as it improves connectivity and facilitates foreign direct investments and business relationships between both Lithuania and the United Kingdom.

“Recovery of Vilnius-London City route again brings new travelling possibilities for partners, the whole business community and Lithuanians living in the UK.”

Last month, Vilnius Airport selected Lithuanian construction company Mitnija to construct a passenger terminal. The company was awarded the public tender worth €25m for the passenger terminal.
