Airport operator Kansai Airports Group and VINCI Airports have partnered to decrease the use of plastic at their airports.

The partnership is expected to increase awareness regarding the effects of plastic on the environment, which is in line with VINCI Airports’ environmental strategy AirPact.

Around nine million tonnes of plastic waste are produced in Japan each year, of which four million tonnes are from plastic bottles, bags and other disposable plastics.

Japan has started charging customers for plastic bags since 1 July.

VINCI Airports and Kansai Airports Group have now begun providing ecological paper bags and bags made from organic, FSC-certified products at stores in Kansai, Osaka Itami and Kobe airports.

In addition, the airports are working towards sustainable development through different initiatives, including renewable energy alternatives, the shift to zero-emission vehicles (ZEV), and the sorting and reduction of waste.

Kansai International Airport was opened in 1994 and is considered a gateway for the Kansai area, the western part of Japan. It is a hub for both domestic and international routes, with round the clock operations.

Last month, VINCI Airports resumed commercial flight activity across its network in Japan as travel restrictions were eased in the country after the Covid-19 outbreak.

In February last year, Kansai International Airport in Japan planned to invest approximately JPY100bn ($909.5m) to expand capacity and enhance safety.
