South Korea’s Incheon International Airport is reportedly using mobile edge computing (MEC) technology for coronavirus screening.

Yonhap news agency reported that MEC technology has been deployed to run an artificial intelligence (AI) system, which will check for Covid-19 symptoms at the airport’s arrival and departure halls.

South Korea Ministry of Science and ICT said that the system will also make use of digital kiosks and video surveillance to check for travellers without masks.

The AI system is designed to even deploy disinfection robots. The measures are intended to help curb the spread of new Covid-19 virus.

According to the ministry, MEC technology helps reduces the delay before transferring instruction by sending data to close by small-scale data centres, rather than to a centralised one, reported Yonhap.

Wireless carrier SK Telecom has installed millimetre wave (mmWave) band 5G base stations at the airport to run the service.

In August, Incheon International Airport Corporation (IIAC) trialled Smiths Detection’s computed tomography (CT)-based carry-on baggage scanner HI-SCAN 6040 CTiX at its Terminal 2 Transfer Inspection Center.

The airport also conducted a trial of the new ultraviolet (UV) light tray disinfection kit.

Smiths Detection’s new UV disinfection kit proved to kill up to 99.9% of microorganisms, including coronaviruses that can be found on trays at checkpoints.
