Upgrades to fire safety systems at Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL) in Honolulu, Hawaii are set to commence with a $17m investment from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
The funding has been issued under the Biden Administration’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.

The first portion of the grant, amounting to $7.3m, is earmarked for the overhaul of the fire alarm system in Terminal 2’s International Arrivals Building.
This upgrade includes the replacement of existing fire alarm control panels and the enhancement of the central fire alarm annunciator display system. Additionally, there will be a comprehensive replacement and addition of fire alarm devices.
A further $9.7m has been allocated to improve the fire sprinkler system within the same terminal.
This project encompasses the installation of new fire sprinkler mains, removal of outdated deluge systems, and integration with the fire alarm system. The modifications extend to switches and wiring, ensuring seamless operation.

Hawai‘i Director of Transportation Ed Sniffen said: “We are grateful for the ongoing support of the Biden Administration, the FAA and our congressional delegation, as we continue to invest in upgrades to our fire detection and suppression systems at airports statewide.”
In addition to HNL’s upgrades, HDOT is progressing with fire safety system improvements at several other airports including Kahului Airport, Hilo International Airport, and Ellison Onizuka International Airport at Keāhole.
This September, FAA allocated over $2bn for airport improvements nationwide, focusing on runway enhancements, air traffic control tower upgrades, and other critical back-of-house infrastructure.
The strategy includes $1.9bn across 519 grants under the Airport Improvement Programme (AIP) and an additional $269m for 62 projects under the AIP’s Supplemental Discretionary Grants fund for fiscal years 2023 to 2025.
The funded projects span various areas such as airport safety, operational efficiency, noise reduction, and zero emissions initiatives including readiness for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) use.
