Heathrow noted that the decision to introduce the higher environmental charge forms part of its sustainability strategy Heathrow 2.0. This aims to deliver a sustainable future for aviation.
The strategy includes a new carbon neutral runway and using 100% renewable electricity to become a zero-carbon airport.
Heathrow CEO John Holland-Kaye said: “Heathrow is determined to reduce the airport’s environmental impacts. Increasing our environmental charges to incentivise airlines to bring their cleanest, quietest aircraft to Heathrow is the best way to cut emissions and shrink the noise footprint around the airport. It is a tangible step that will make a real difference to local communities.”
The airport plans to set up an airside ultra-low emission zone by 2025. This is designed to improve the quality of life for local communities with cleaner air.

New transport systems will enable the airport to reach its 2030 goal of 50% of its passengers travelling by sustainable transport.
Additionally, Heathrow has invested in electric vehicles and charging points at the airport. The airport has also unveiled a new scheme to encourage colleagues to purchase low-emission vehicles.
Heathrow believes that all the measures combined will help it improve its environmental impact.
