Heathrow Airport has selected American infrastructure firm AECOM as the lead designer for its Future Terminal 2 (T2) Programme.

Under the eight-year contract, AECOM will design and manage a new baggage handling system.

AECOM will also be responsible for integrating different workstreams in the programme, which will include demolishing Terminal 1 and creating the new infrastructure for a permanent baggage system at T2.

The financial terms of the contract were not disclosed.

AECOM Aviation managing director in Europe, the Middle East and Africa Richard Gammon said: “The programme’s delivery model enables AECOM and Heathrow to build one collaborative team focused on finding the best and most innovative solutions for this multifaceted programme.

T2 is currently using the baggage system at the closed T1. This programme will provide an integrated system at T2.

The airport expects the new baggage system to build the terminal’s future growth capacity, as well as offering effective baggage handling and an improved passenger experience.

Earlier this month, Plaza Premium Group opened an Aerotel property inside London Heathrow Airport Terminal 3.

Last year, Heathrow Airport handled a record 80.1 million passengers, an increase of 2.7% compared to the same period of 2017.

In November last year, Heathrow Airport chose Copenhagen Optimization’s Better Airport software to improve its operations and accommodate future growth.
