Gweru Airport (GWE) in Zimbabwe and PLM Middle East have formed a strategic partnership to develop the airport with an investment plan of nearly $176m.

Both parties entered an agreement at the 2021 Arab Aviation Summit (AAS), a regional aviation and tourism industry event in Ras Al Khaimah, UAE.

According to the agreement, PLM Middle East will deliver advanced technology and design upgrade work at the airport.

PLM Middle East will be responsible for developing the Gweru Airport operations and investment management.

The agency will also carry out a comprehensive assessment of the airport for designing concept and evaluating potential for upgrade and improvement, with a four-step approach to strengthen the partnership.

In addition, the partners will also explore international operators and foreign investment opportunities for inclusive project development.

Arabian Aerospace quoted Gweru Airport CEO Iddo T Mudavanhu as saying: “Zimbabwe is home to the Southern African Development Community (SADC), driving engagement across countries such as South Africa, Botswana, Zambia and Mozambique, in addition to offering ease of access to southern DRC and south-eastern Angola, eastern Namibia and south-western Malawi.

“As the connecting link, at Gweru Airport we are confident of attracting world-class entities such as FedEx, DHL, Alibaba and Amazon by serving as a hub for the region. With the signing of the agreement with PLM Middle East, we look forward to partnering with global investors to strengthen our expansion plans.”
