The UK’s Gatwick Airport has awarded a contract to civil engineering firm Bechtel for the £180m expansion of Pier 6 in the North Terminal.
The expansion forms a part of Gatwick’s current five-year £2.7bn capital investment programme.

Upon completion, the project will improve operational efficiency at the airport to support continued growth.
Gatwick construction director Raymond Melee said: “This is one of the most important programmes of work we have in our current capital investment programme as it will give a crucial boost to our operational efficiency and help us to grow sustainably.
“It will be complex, as it is right in the heart of our airfield, but we are experienced in delivering complicated projects in challenging environments at Gatwick.”
Two major enabling projects must be completed at the airport before the expansion project can commence.

By GlobalDataProjects include the shifting of A380 stand from Pier 6 to Pier 5 and widening and re-alignment of a taxiway to enable A380 movement between the runway and its new stand.
The Pier 6 extension will be built under a construction management delivery model. Bechtel will be responsible for the management of engineering, procurement and construction works and will be integrated with Gatwick’s in-house teams.
Bechtel UK managing director Paul Gibbs said: “This appointment is a positive reflection of our partnership with Gatwick Airport.
“We know that construction in the middle of a very busy airfield can be complex, so we will be working alongside Gatwick’s operational teams to ensure the work is sequenced carefully and that the passenger experience is maintained throughout.”
Both parties intend to start the expansion work next year, which will be carried out in four phases. The pier will become operational in the first quarter of 2022.
