The HK$141.5bn ($18bn) 3RS expansion project involves the reclamation of around 650ha of land for a new runway, passenger building and related infrastructure.

Following project completion, the airport will reportedly have the capacity for an additional 30 million passengers every year.

Fugro Regional Business Line director Cyril Chan said: “AAHK is a very important client who shares our values of safety and quality.

“They recognise that Fugro’s client-focused culture and our strong delivery capability will complement their challenging project schedule. We look forward to providing AAHK with critical subsurface data to help them manage and mitigate their ground risks.”

Fugro previously helped HKAA to use non-dredge methods such as deep cement mixing to reduce marine environmental impact.

Construction work on the 3RS project began in August 2016. The new runway is expected to be operational in 2022 while the 3RS project is scheduled for completion in 2024.

In February 2017, AAHK selected Australian company Aconex to design and develop the 3RS project at HKIA.

The project includes the construction of a 3,800m runway and supporting taxiway systems, the extension of the existing Terminal II and the redevelopment of the existing north runway.

A third runway passenger building, featuring 57 new parking spaces and a new apron, will also be constructed.
