German airport operator Fraport has announced its plans to use wind power to source most of the electricity at Frankfurt Airport.
This move is part of its efforts to meet its climate protection targets.

It has planned to enter an agreement for an annual minimum purchase quantity with an offshore wind farm operator by 2025.
Fraport executive board chairman Stefan Schulte said: “Even in these most challenging times, we remain firmly focused on the challenge of climate protection.
“With this wind power project alone, we plan to obtain around 85% of the electricity used at Frankfurt Airport from renewable sources from 2025.”
Fraport added that, by 2030, it aims to cover most of its electricity consumption at Frankfurt Airport using renewable sources.

By GlobalDataBy 2030, Fraport aims to decrease its annual CO₂ emissions at Frankfurt Airport to 80,000t from 170,000t. From 2050, it aims to become CO₂-free and eliminate all emissions.
Fraport aims to procure around 350 gigawatt-hours of green electricity annually under the power purchase agreement with an offshore wind farm operator.
Schulte added: “We are looking for are liable partner to help us step up our use of renewable energy. This type of 9 June 2020 agreement allows us to make secure plans for the future without having to implement the project ourselves.”
However, the operator also plans to generate its own electricity at the airport. Currently, the first large-scale photovoltaic system is under construction at the airport on a new cargo hall in Cargo City South.
This system is slated to provide more than 1.5 million kilowatt-hours of electricity annually.
Fraport has also planned to construct a photovoltaic plant on the new Terminal 3 parking garage.
Along with future measures, these will increase the green electricity share at the airport to approximately 94% by 2030.
Last year, Fraport reached an agreement to deploy FlightAware’s real-time predictive technology at Frankfurt Airport to further optimise flight operations.
