Swiss airport operator Flughafen Zurich and Spain-based Aena have separately won auctions to operate a number of airports in Brazil.
The companies were competing with rivals, including Vinci and Fraport.

Flughafen Zurich won the auction for a block of airports in the south-eastern region of Brazil in a deal valued at R$437m ($114.73m).
The 30-year concession agreement will see Flughafen Zürich manage the operation of the airports of Vitória and Macaé starting from the second half of 2019 in the south-east of Brazil. The airports welcomed approximately 3.2 million travellers in 2018.
The Swiss firm said that it will invest around CHF80m (approximately $80m) in the expansion of the airports in the first few years.
Separately, Aena won concessions for the north-east Brazil airport group, which includes Recife, Maceió, Aracajú, Campina Grande, João Pessoa, and Juazeiro do Norte airports, for a period of 30 years with an option to extend the contract for another five years.

By GlobalDataIn lieu of operating the six airports in north-eastern Brazil, Aena will pay R$1.9bn ($498.34m) to the Government of Brazil.
The north-east airport group handled more than 13 million passengers in 2018, 6.5% of total Brazilian traffic.
Aena said in a statement: “Furthermore, the inclusion of these six airports in Aena’s network consolidates the company’s global leadership as an airport operator by helping to enhance the synergies of its network with the Madrid and Barcelona hub airports as well as with the Latin American airports in which Aena has a stake in Mexico, Colombia, and Jamaica.”
Outside Spain, Aena has a presence in 12 airports in Mexico, two in Colombia, two in Jamaica and one in the UK.
