Dubai International Airport (DXB) welcomed more than 89.1 million passengers in 2018, an increase of 1% compared to the previous year.

Data released by DXB operator Dubai Airports indicated that it is the world’s busiest airport for international travellers.

A total of 89,149,387 travellers passed through the airport in the past 12 months, which enabled DXB to retain its position as the world’s busiest airport for international customer numbers for the fifth consecutive year.

Dubai Airport passenger traffic decreased by 1.7% in December to 7,722,959 passengers, reducing the average monthly traffic at the airport to 7.4 million for 2018.

India was the busiest destination by passenger numbers with 12,279,485 travellers, while Saudi Arabia was in second position with 6,471,142. The UK was the third largest source market country with 6,284,771 flyers.

The number of Russian passengers surged by 14.5% to 1,533,654, while Chinese flyers increased by 6% to 3,512,075 over the course of the year.

Passenger flow from Eastern Europe witnessed double-digit growth of 16.7%, followed by Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) at 12.9% and Africa at 9.8%.

London (3,817,889), Mumbai (2,540,750) and Kuwait (2,194,576) were the top three cities for passengers.

However, annual cargo volumes at the airport decreased by 0.5% to 2,641,383t in the same period.
