Riga International Airport in Latvia has signed an agreement with DHL Latvia and Castor Construction to build a modern shipment processing and logistics centre.
According to the plan, the new cargo logistics centre will cover an area of 4,500m² and be built in less than a year.

After the completion of the centre, DHL will move its base to the new airport terminal.
The proposed logistics centre will feature a new sorting facility for better shipment handling. It will also include energy-efficient solutions, such as electric vehicles, to decrease CO2 emissions.
Riga Airport board chairman Ilona Līce said: “The new DHL cargo logistics centre will ensure a stable long-term air cargo flow at Riga Airport.
“Considering the rapidly changing dynamics of air cargo shipments, the main and decisive role in attracting and developing the international cargo logistics solution at Riga Airport is the development of low-cost infrastructure, high quality of services, clear and simple customs procedures, and added value that based on innovations can be created by cargo companies and regulatory authorities.”

By GlobalDataRiga Airport will be able to double its cargo handling capacity with the development of the aerodrome infrastructure and the new cargo apron.
Līce added: “The main task of the airport is to provide appropriate infrastructure and a favourable platform for cooperation, which will facilitate the entry of new cargo carriers and increase the turnover of air cargo.”
Latvia’s cargo business consists of exporting and importing high value-added goods, mail and e-commerce, transit air cargo handling and non-military cargo transit to Afghanistan for the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF).
In the first nine months of this year, the airport handled 20,000t of air cargo, which accounts for half of the volume in the Baltics.
